Math Instruction at Del Mar Heights
Del Mar Heights School is committed to preparing students for the meaningful application of mathematics in the 21st century. Guided by current research and the Common Core State Standards, we strive to promote the development of students’ conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application of mathematics concepts. The goal of math instruction is to foster children’s ability to interpret and solve problems, communicate mathematically, and confidently apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. We maintain a curriculum that is responsive to each child and their individual needs.
Responsive Instruction and Differentiation
Teachers understand that each child is a unique learner. With this in mind, they carefully assess each student, craft specific math activities on an ongoing basis, and offer appropriate extensions to promote growth.
Math Instruction in _______ Grade
- A target of sixty to ninety minutes daily
- Daily problem solving
- Number Talks: Math concept discussions
- Individual, small group, and whole-class work
- Enrichment and extension options: independent and group projects, internet-based extensions, and individualized challenges
What math work can you expect to see come home?
Students create many pieces of work during math time. Some work will remain at school while other work will come home. Work which comes home does not represent the entirety of a student’s math experiences. Math work is frequently kept at school for revisiting or further discussion. Also, many math activities are done using math tools instead of pencil and paper. Expect work that comes home to have a range of teacher markings, from fully-graded to unmarked.
